Why Use a Fire Extinguisher Stand?

Placing extinguishers on stands is a crucial part of meeting UK fire safety compliance. The British Standard BS 5306-8 recommends that extinguishers are not placed directly on the floor. Keeping them on a stand or a wall bracket prevents accidental damage, stops them from being obstructed or moved, and ensures they remain highly visible and ready for use in an emergency. A stand is the perfect, flexible solution when wall-mounting is not practical or when the wall structure is not suitable for a heavy extinguisher.

Choosing Your Stand: Plastic vs. Metal & Chrome

The environment is a key factor in selecting the right stand.

  • Durable Plastic Stands: These robust, cost-effective models are the industry all-rounder. Lightweight, easy to clean, and resistant to scuffs and corrosion, they are ideal for high-traffic areas, industrial environments, workshops, schools, and hospitals. They are most commonly available in red or grey.

  • Metal & Chrome Stands: For environments where aesthetics are a key consideration, metal stands offer a premium solution. Our polished chrome and painted metal stands are perfect for modern offices, reception areas, hotels, and retail spaces. They provide a high-end, professional look while maintaining the durability needed to securely hold the extinguisher.

Finding the Right Fit: Single, Double & CO2 Stands

  • Single vs. Double Stands: We offer both single stands for individual extinguishers and double stands. A double stand is an excellent way to create a "fire point," allowing you to co-locate two different types of extinguishers (such as a water-based and a CO2 extinguisher) as recommended for specific fire risks.

  • Note on CO2 Extinguishers: Please be aware that 2kg CO2 extinguishers often have a smaller diameter than water, foam, or powder models. While many of our stands are universal, some may require a specific CO2-compatible stand or a small adapter plate to hold the 2kg unit securely. Always check the product description for compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I legally have to use a fire extinguisher stand? While not a specific law itself, UK fire safety regulations (like the RRFSO) require you to maintain your safety equipment. BS 5306-8 sets the standard for this, recommending that extinguishers are kept off the floor, either on a stand or a wall bracket. Using a stand is a key part of demonstrating compliance.

Can I use these stands outdoors? Most plastic stands are durable enough for sheltered outdoor areas. However, for locations with full exposure to weather or in harsh environments, we recommend a heavy-duty GRP stand or a dedicated fire extinguisher cabinet for maximum, long-term protection.

What is the difference between a stand and a cabinet? A stand provides a secure, visible, and accessible location for an extinguisher. A cabinet provides protection from theft, vandalism, weather, or harsh industrial environments. Stands are the standard for general indoor use, while cabinets are intended for high-risk or external areas.
