Alarms Suitable for Scottish Regulations

The new law in Scotland requires all homes (owned or rented) to have interlinked Smoke and Heat alarms installed by February 2022. Where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance (such as boilers, fires and heaters) or a flue, then a Carbon Monoxide alarm is also required.

The below selection of alarm ranges are all suitable to meet the new Scotland Regulations which take effect from February 2022:

  • Whether you require hardwired, battery or wireless domestic alarm products, the Specification range with Smart RF from FireAngel offers a solution to suit each and every installation.

By simply fitting a Smart RF Module to any 'Smart RF Ready' FireAngel product, you can create a wireless network of up to 50 devices. Each device must have a Smart RF Module installed or must already be a wireless enabled product. Once connected each interlinked alarm communicates continuously across a meshed network to monitor for fire or carbon monoxide (CO). When smoke, heat or carbon monoxide is detected, the Smart RF modules will signal each other to create a fast response alert throughout the property.

  • HiSPEC RF Pro are a range of smart, cost-effective and reliable smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms designed for domestic properties. Offering an option for mains-powered or sealed 10 year lithium battery powered alarms, each alarm has built-in radio-interlink technology allowing any alarm in this series to interconnect with each other (up to a maximum of 20 devices).

There is also an RF control unit accessory available for the alarms, enabling a convenient means for testing and silencing a system of devices from a single location.

  • The Honeywell Home R200 series alarms feature smoke, heat and carbon monoxide sensors powered by tamper-proof 10 year lithium batteries. These alarms are designed for all types of homes, including leisure accommodation, guest houses and caravans. With built-in radio-interlink technology, up to 12 alarms can be interconnected to form a synchronised system.

  • The FireHawk range offers mains-powered and sealed lithium battery powered alarms. The mains-powered alarms can be connected via a hard-wire interlink or wirelessly using the FH550RF Radio Interlink Base (a separate base is required for each alarm to interlink wirelessly). The sealed battery powered alarms can be interlinked using the built-in radio technology included with these alarms.

  • Aico's RadioLINK wireless interconnection technology uses radio frequency (RF) signals to wirelessly link your Aico alarms together with additional functionality. Interconnected alarms are vital so that occupants can hear an alarm warning throughout a property, but the technology can now do so much more including whole system data extraction and monitoring. The Aico RadioLINK products are also compatible to connect wirelessly with Aico SmartLINK products.

With a whole range of different sensors, call points, test switches and accessories, the RadioLINK product range offers a smart solution for every situation:

  • The FireAngel W1-PF-T series of alarms are mains powered with a 9v alkaline back-up battery. These alarms are designed with installers in mind and come complete with PushFit bases which simply clip onto the alarm head and allow extra room for terminating the cabling. The W1-PF-T series includes an optical smoke alarm, heat alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm to provide full protection for any property. These alarms can be hard-wire interlinked as standard or radio-interlinked using the RF-BW-T RF Base (separate RF bases required for each alarm if radio-interlinking).

    From £20.12 Inc VAT
  • The Aico Ei3000 series are mains-powered alarms with sealed lithium back-up batteries. They can be interlinked either via hard-wire interconnection, or via wireless radio connection using the Ei3000MRF plug-in module (a separate module is required for each alarm to wirelessly link). These alarms and devices are also compatible to interlink wirelessly with the Aico RadioLINK series.

  • Kidde offers a reliable and high-quality range of mains-powered smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms. Including their "Slick" range which can be upgraded for wireless interconnection using the RF-SFTP radio-interlink base and the steadfast KF series alarms which offer smart, cost-effective and low profile 230v units. All of the below Kidde mains-powered alarms are compatible for interconnection via hard-wire linking. The radio-link option using RF-SFTP bases is only compatible with the SFW/R series alarms (not KF series or CO alarms).

  • These Lumi-Plugin LED downlights feature mains powered smoke and heat alarms which are built-in to the centre of the units. There is also a sealed 10 year battery CO alarm available in the range. Reducing ceiling clutter, these sleek downlights combine vital fire safety equipment with aesthetic LED lighting in a single combined unit. The smoke and heat alarms have built-in radio-interlink technology and can connect with each other to form a synchronised system, meaning if one alarm triggers, all alarms on the system will sound.

  • Under the new Scottish Legislation a carbon monoxide alarm is required in every room with a carbon-fuelled appliance such as a boiler, fire, stove, heater or a flue. The carbon monoxide alarms do not need to be interlinked with the smoke and heat alarms but must be powered either by a sealed longlife battery or by mains power. The below carbon monoxide alarms all meet the requirements of the new legislation:

How many alarms do I need and where do I need them?

By February 2022 all homes in Scotland are required to have the following alarms installed:

  • One smoke alarm - installed in every circulation space on each floor level, such as hallways and landings
  • One smoke alarm - installed in the room most used for general daytime living purposes
  • One heat alarm - installed in every kitchen space
  • One carbon monoxide alarm - installed in every room with a carbon-fuelled appliance (such as boilers, fires, stoves and heaters) or a flue

All alarms should be ceiling mounted and interlinked so that when one alarm is activated, all alarms in the property will sound to provide a synchronised warning throughout.

Carbon Monoxide alarms where fitted do not need to be interlinked with the smoke and heat alarms, however it is recommended that this is done where it is possible to provide the highest level of protection.

What type of alarms are suitable for the new legislation?

The new law details specific requirements for the types of alarms you can use as not every alarm on the market is suitable to meet the new legislation. The following minimum requirements apply:

Power Supply: All alarms must be either mains-powered or powered by a sealed long-life lithium battery which is tamper-proof. Any alarms which are only powered by replaceable batteries (e.g. AA, 9v alkaline etc) are not compliant with the legislation.

Interlink: All Smoke and Heat alarms must be interlinked to form a connected and synchronised system. This can be achieved either through a hard-wire interlink (an interconnection cable which runs through all alarms) or via wireless radio connection. Stand-alone alarms which cannot be interlinked are not allowed. Carbon monoxide alarms are not required to interlink with the Smoke and Heat alarms, but it is recommended that this is done where possible to offer the highest level of protection.

Approvals: Smoke, Heat and Carbon Monoxide alarms should all be certified to the necessary standards by an approved third party body such as the BSi (Kitemark) or LPCB.

All of our alarms in this category are fully certified to meet the required standards which are as follows for each alarm type:

Smoke Alarms: BS EN14604:2005

Heat Alarms: BS 5446-2:2003

Carbon Monoxide Alarms: British Kitemark EN 50291-1
