Fire Alarm Zone Plans

A Fire Alarm Zone Plan is a diagram which illustrates the building layout, indicating entrances, circulation areas, and the fire alarm zone divisions. These plans should be situated next to each CIE (Control & Indicating Equipment), which refers to any fire alarm control panel or fire alarm repeater panel.

When an alarm is activated, the zone is typically displayed as the primary indication on the fire alarm control panel, often through an illuminated LED. The Fire Alarm Zone Plan is placed adjacent to the control panel to assist users or fire and rescue personnel in quickly identifying and reaching the zone where the fire alarm was triggered.

Why is a Zone Plan needed?

Fire Alarm Zone Plans play a crucial role in linking the zone LED displayed on the fire alarm control panel to a specific and identifiable area of the building, enabling a prompt and secure response to the alarm.

As per BS 5839-1:2017, if a competent person or company conducts maintenance on a fire alarm system, failing to have a zone plan is deemed a significant non-compliance and should be recorded accordingly.
