EN54-23 Visual Alarm Devices (VADs)

A Visual Alarm Device (VAD) is a device that emits clear visual signals in emergency situations to facilitate efficient evacuation. VADs can be used both indoors and outdoors, mounted on walls or ceilings, and can be standalone or integrated into larger alarm systems. They are particularly useful in environments with high levels of background noise or where individuals may be wearing hearing protection or headphones. Additionally, VADs are important for providing accessible emergency warnings for individuals with impaired hearing or deafness, ensuring that all individuals are protected in public spaces, offices, educational environments and toilets.

VADs are a requirement in locations where the visual warning element is the primary source of alarm for individuals who would not be alerted by alarm sounders. They must comply with EN54-23
